about

Esmeralda Destiny Analysis: two songs combining two very different worlds, one in Zurich, Switzerland, the other in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

DISCO DOOM

Disco Doom from Zurich/Switzerland is the band of Anita Rufer and Gabriele De Mario, who have been working together since the late 90s. They explore musical genres and their boundaries in indie rock, noise and experimental pop with various musicians who complement the band. The band is working on a new record which will be released in early 2021 on Exploding in Sound Records (Brooklyn/NY) who already released their previous album “Numerals”. Disco Doom tour regularly in Europe and the US and have also played on several tours of bands such as Built to Spill or The Breeders.

ABOUT THE SPLIT

Anita and Gabriele: “We are in the lucky position to o en meet people from other cultures and to exchange and share experiences. This makes us realize again and again how close we are to each other. Oruã, share with us the love for indie music, experimentation, collages and they fascinate with an ease that is second to none. An unmistakable voice and its rhythm … leaves us into the distortion of time and space.”

ORUÃ

ORUÃ is a child of downtown, was born at night and at- tends the parties at dawn. Free jazz made by poor guys. Working-class’ krautrock. They play in Rio de Janeiro’s outskirts, Europe and in the United States, do not travel on tourism and have never been on an exchange pro- gram. Another project led by the prolific Lê Almeida, “the Brazilian answer to Robert Pollard”, according to The Guardian.

Raw and sophisticated, their ochre-tinted sound does not fit into the artificial color palette of a neo-psychedelic wave which is ever more dependent on pedals and effects. With afrobeat, Clube da Esquina, some classic Matador Records albums, 70’s riffs, amulets, space cookies and a cassette tape recorder on hand, the band have embarked on a journey way o the beaten path.

Recommended for fans of: Stereolab, Black Sabbath, BadBadNotGood, Milton Nascimento, CAN, Thee Oh Sees, JB de Carvalho, Ty Segall, Sun Ra, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Tortoise, Boogarins and Yo La Tengo.

ABOUT THE SPLIT

Lê Almeida: “I couldn’t hope for anything more from be- ing on tour around Europe playing drums in Built to Spill and also playing with Oruã, but in the middle of the tour, which had two bands opening all the shows, one of the bands switched and in came Disco Doom. I remember it was in Berlin. They were very discreet, used huge amplifiers and the sound was one of the most beautiful surprises that I had traveling outside the country with the BTS. A er this first concert I started to listen to them and whenever I had a chance, even not knowing any English, I tried to approach them. This is how I discovered that two of Gabriele’s favorite bands were also two of my most special bands (Kiss and Guided By Voices).

In the last show that Oruã played with Disco Doom, Gabriele wore our shirt and dedicated a song to us, ‘Surrender’, an older track of theirs which I had mentioned days earlier and which I liked a lot. They said they didn’t play that song live, so that night was special. After the 2019 tour with BTS I got in touch with Disco Doom and we put together the project of making a split, giving birth to ‘Esmeralda Destiny Analysis’. A simple way of eternalizing a demonstration of affection and admiration.
